Abstract

I Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) have been drawing researchers' attention to a wide range of applications, especially to assistance and motor rehabilitation, since there is not a great variety of available treatments nowadays and these are not completely effective. Although EEG-based BMIs have a huge potential for motor rehabilitation, there are still a few challenges that must be overcome before their usage may be spread. One of the most notable challenges is the large intersubject variability found in EEG signals, which hinders the extraction of relevant information for BMIs, such as the identification of the following event-related potentials: Event-related Desynchronization (ERD) and Event-related Synchronization (ERS). This suggests that tailoring BMIs to the subjects might be the key to implementing reliable BMIs. Therefore this project aims to identify the movement intention of a subject while performing a coincident-timing task by analyzing EEG signals and taking into account their intersubject variability in order to contribute to the implementation of BMIs towards motor rehabilitation.
