Abstract

Particulate Material (PM) formation is a category of Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) that requires Characterization Factors (FCs) for specific regions, as these factors are sensitive according to the geographic scope of the variables used to model them. Due to this demand, this project aims to obtain CFs for the PM formation LCIA category, for the Brazilian context, based on the regionalization of a characterization model. The proposed methodology is divided into five steps: 1) selection of a base model, which consists of analyzing existing characterization models and choosing a model to be followed in the regionalization procedure; 2) regionalization of Intake Fraction (IF), which will be developed by a survey of calculation variables in Brazilian databases, or modeling of the variables necessary for the reality in Brazil; 3) regionalization of Effect Factors (EF), with a methodological procedure similar to the regionalization of IFs. Also, at this stage, new CFs for Brazil will be calculated, by multiplying the IFs with the regionalized EFs; 4) analysis of the uncertainties of regionalized CFs, which will be developed based on previous bibliographic research of methods for calculating CF uncertainties, followed by the application of the calculation in the obtained CFs, and; 5) application in case studies, which will consist in the development of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) case studies focusing on sensitivity analysis for the choice of CFs in the PM formation category. It is expected a reduction of uncertainties associated with CFs for the Brazilian context since the current models were developed for geographic scopes different from the Brazilian one. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis will serve for a greater scientific basis to the comparative analysis of the CFs obtained by this project with current literature data. The work schedule is expected to be developed over four years of work, and the project has national and international partners from the field of research. (AU)
