Abstract

The increase of environmental contamination is largely related to anthropic activities. An important source of this contamination is Agriculture. The amount of pesticides used in this production has increased due to the higher demand by food due to population growth. The residues of these products contaminate the soil, air and water and, therefore, present a direct or indirect risk to human and environmental health. The acute and chronic exposure to pesticides is related to several negative effects on human health, including the increased risk of cancers, such as Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). Despite the different exposure routes, the population most susceptible to the effects of pesticides are the individuals occupationally exposed. Therefore, this study aims to: 1) to analyze the concentration of pesticides in the urine of individuals without cancer exposed and nonexposed to pesticides; 2) to evaluate genomic instability in individuals without cancer exposed and non-exposed; and 3) to determine the expression profile of microRNAs (miRNAs) in NHL patients and individuals without cancer exposed and non-exposed to pesticides by NanoString technology; 4) the miRNAs identified as biomarkers in healthy individuals and patients will be validated using digital PCR technology; 5) to evaluate the DNA methylation profile in the blood plasma of individuals with and without cancer by the RRBS methodology.
