Abstract

The social representation of the child through the ages has been and is a concern in several areas of knowledge, such as philosophy, sociology, and anthropology. However, literature also, as a vehicle for social denunciations, talked about childhood in different historical moments. The present project aims to analyze what was the form of representation of childhood and the poor child in the novels Oliver Twist (1838) by Charles Dickens and Os Miseráveis (1862) by Victor Hugo, comparing the similar and different aspects in the construction of the characters Cosette and Gavroche by Hugo and Nancy and Oliver by Dickens. With this, it is expected to understand the main differences between children, according to their sex, and how their family context can influence their formation. For this, a reading of the works will be necessary, as well as the analysis of academic and theoretical texts about the works and concerning the comparative literature.(AU)
