Abstract

The aim of this research project is to study a group of modern films made in Brazil approximately during the years of the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985) which are characterized by poetic manifestations of repetition in their formal and narrative structures, explicitly or not. We can find such manifestations in a series of different films, whether or not they are part of Cinema Novo or Cinema Marginal. Through filmic analysis, we investigate the meanings and configurations of cinematographic repetition, paying special attention to the transformations and metamorphoses that the use of such poetics undergoes throughout the period framed by this research. The central hypothesis here is that there would be an oscillation between, on one hand, the repetition linked to narrative and thematic motives (psychological or historical), and, on the other hand, the repetition freed from representation, linked to the filmic materiality itself. We could say, therefore, that there are, throughout Brazilian modern cinema, passages between "the repetition in cinema" and the "cinema of repetition". (AU)
