Abstract

Much of the world's population today reside in large urban centers. In places with a higher population concentration, there is also a large release of particulate material (PM) for energy generation, by industries, and by means of transportation. Air pollution is known to be the major environmental cause of disease and premature death in the world and several studies show associations between air pollution and the onset and worsening of cardiovascular, respiratory, fetal, and newborn diseases and, more recently, kidney diseases. The impacts of pollution on the development and progression of chronic kidney disease have been studied, however, few studies address the impacts of air pollution on the progression from an acute kidney injury event to chronic kidney disease. This project aims to tackle this theme. (AU)
