Abstract

Written between the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century by a Cistercian monk, the treatise Horto do Esposo is a genuinely Portuguese work and rich in descriptions of devotional practices. Although produced in a monastic environment, this book provides elements to analyze the formation expected not only for religious or clerics, but for the faithful in general. With emphasis on this document, this research will analyze the extent to which the vigil of the five senses was configured as a catechetical lesson. In other words, by serializing Portuguese prescriptions and exempla, this study will seek to examine the role given to the correction ofsensory impressions in Portuguese pastoral games of the late Middle Ages.
