Abstract

Flexible and biocompatible devices that emulate synaptic and neuronal functions for interaction with biological tissue are of great importance for improvement of current wearable technology. Real devices simulating synapses and small neural networks have been successfully developed based on electrochemical transistors and promise a revolution in present data storage and processing. Organic Electrochemical Transistors (OECTs) present working mechanisms and performance like real brain synapses, with relative high performance at low voltage operation. Therefore, aiming the improvement in data storage and processing, in this project the development of OECTs based on thin films of PEDOT:PSS (Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly (styrene sulfonate)) and Melanin is proposed. The PEDOT:PSS presents high performance in OECTs due to its high charge mobility and high interaction with ions at the PEDOT:PSS/electrolyte interface, and melanin as a biocompatible natural pigment with potential to improve ionic interactions, aiming future applications in bioelectronics.
