Abstract Kuramoto's model is a paradigm in the study of synchronization. In its original version, the model consists of a set of oscillators with different natural frequencies that, when conveniently coupled, start to oscillate in sync. Several generalizations of the model have been proposed recently, including applying external forces and extending to more dimensions. All of these systems present a transition from the disordered to the synchronized phase, which can be of first or second order. In this project we will study the two-dimensional Kuramoto system where the coupling between oscillators is generalized to a matrix, instead of a scalar constant. We intend to simulate the system numerically and study approximate analytical solutions using the ansatz of Ott and Antonsen, checking if new behaviors can arise depending on the shape of the coupling matrix.
