Abstract

Metamaterials are a class of engineered material exhibiting properties that do not occur naturally or are not obtained from their constituent materials. Elastic/acoustic metamaterials can tailor the propagation of elastic waves through the generation frequency ranges of strong wave attenuation (bandgaps), that are either the result of wave scattering at periodic impedance mismatch zones (Bragg scattering) or are generated by resonating units. Smart materials have been explored to obtain linear locally resonant piezoelectric metastructures with tunable properties. The goal in this proposal is the modeling and experimental verification of a piezoelectric metamaterial beam, basic steps for future adaptive and programmable metamaterials. Therefore, the student will be in touch with basic disciplines, such as structural dynamics and electronics, as well as with concepts such as linear piezoelectricity and vibration tests.(AU)
