Abstract

Phononic crystals and acoustic/elastic metamaterials are composite structures designed to tailor their acoustic and elastic wave properties through bandgaps. Due to their unique wave properties, phononic crystals and metamaterials have been used for a wide variety of applications, including acoustic and vibration isolation, cloaking, focusing, sound collimation and refraction of sound waves. Although the use of smart materials has been explored by different research groups, the development of smart metastructures with adaptive and self-adjusting properties still deserves significant research efforts. The main motivation in this proposal is to explore the use of piezoelectric materials and shape memory alloys to obtain innovative self-regulated configurations of smart metamaterials with enhanced vibro-acoustic and piezoelectric energy harvesting performance under different conditions.
