Abstract

For Brazilian historiography, the 20th century was a period of dynamism and complexity. The interest in history and other interpretations about the country was renewed. New ways of producing and thinking history are imposed, and institutional and dissemination of production spaces expand as privileged places for the debate about particular questions of the area. This research project aims to contribute in History of Historiography by the study of writings of historian and professor of History of Brazil Hélio Vianna (1908-1972), commonly associated, in historiography, to a traditional and conservative way of writing and teaching history. With the analysis - based on the notions of historiographic regime and historiographical operation - of his works, didactic materials and his historiographic criticism, it aims to understand what it is to be a historian in Brazil in the decades of 1930 to 1960, between institutes, universities and other institutions of production and dissemination of historical knowledge. Therefore, the study of the work of Hélio Vianna allows us to problematize the period, often characterized as the transition of the historiographic production.
