Abstract

Traditional forestry breeding programs in Brazil are primarily focused on meeting the demands of the pulp and paper industries. Most part of the solid wood market is supplied by the exploitation of natural forests. One species that has gained global attention, regarding this market, it is the African mahogany (Khaya spp). So, it is proposed in this project, to estimate the genetic parameters; as well as the genotype x environment interaction effects in K. senegalensis progenies tests established in different areas of Brazil. The study aims to improve the species yield by obtaining favorable genotypes for wood production. The study will be conducted with six tests in different locations using progenies collected from five African provenances. They will be checked annually for: total height, diameter at 30 cm above the soil and chest height, first whorl insertion height, survival rate, stem shape, height of the bifurcation, diameter of the bifurcated branches. Subsequently, the growth rate of the progenies in each location, adaptability and stability will be calculated. The results will guide the selection of the more productive and predictable genotypes considering the different planting sites. This way, it is possible to make suggestions regarding the installation of commercial stands, in order to produce wood of high quality meeting the demands of the solid wood market.
