Abstract

This project aims to study the general exhibitions organized by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro between 1840 and 1884, focusing on their transnational dimension. For the development of this research, part of our thesis entitled "General exhibitions (1840-1884) in the articulation of the artistic system in Rio de Janeiro" (FAPESP Grant 19/10191-4), we will investigate international exhibitions model and their adaptation in Rio de Janeiro's context; the circulation of artists, works of art - ancient and modern - and artistic models; as well as it's instances of legitimation, through the analysis of art criticism, awards from the Imperial Academy and acquisitions (public or private). This initial approach stems from discussions of quantitative methods as tools for art history; the use of exhibition catalogs as a source for a social history of art and on the practice of collecting and the market in its relationship with academic exhibitions.
