Abstract

This project aims to investigate and evaluate the discursive genre "graphic memoir" by establishing a possible dialogue between it and a critical language education. It is a qualitative-interpretative investigation grounded on Literacy studies and a Bakhtinian approach to discursive/textual genres and/in their relations with the construction/representation of subjectivities, and with society. Specifically, we propose i) to investigate the risen and the popularization of the genre "graphic memoir", describing its main aspects and (some of) its main production contexts - both in printing and digital support - ; ii) to patch up possible insertions of the graphic memoir "El Deafo", by Cece Bell (2014) in language education processes at regular schools, according to a critical literacies perpective. Therefore, the proposal finds support in literacy approaches to language education that go beyond linguistic aspects only, so that it also focuses on broaching multiple modes and means applied in meaning-making processes, sociocultural diversity, and inclusion, in life and the arts. The study is justified by its contemporary theme and the up datedness of the investigated object, by its social and historical contextualization in the educational field, mostly by the theoretic-analytic contributions that we hope may result from the development of this proposal.(AU)
