Abstract

This research will address the way in which the state's management of minors took place at the beginning of the 20th century, with a focus on institutions for childcare in the state of São Paulo. It is related to this objective to investigate how the relationship between State and family occurred with regard to the task of educating interned youth. The starting point is, therefore, the following: not only the minor's family acquires the obligation to fulfill the task of educating him, but also the institution that welcomes him when he finds himself in a situation of abandonment or delinquency. Once the abandonment of minors will come to be seen as a problem for society in the early years of the 20th century, and based on a moral discourse, state policies will seek to implement a social order based on the discipline of work as a way to insert them into the society. To undertake this task, the research will make use of the analysis of discourses present in the records of the Social Service for Assistance and Protection of Minors in São Paulo, from 1934 to 1950. In addition to the records, auxiliary sources will be mobilized such as the bulletins of the Social Service for Minors , the relevant legislation and the periodicals of the press of the time. (AU)
