Abstract

Canine hip dysplasia (CCD) is characterized by an abnormal hip development, in which functional laxity, joint incongruity, and debilitating degenerative joint disease in more advanced stages stand out. Despite decades of studies, many gaps in the disease comprehension still persist and must be clarified for better treatment results. Classically, radiographic methods are used for CCD diagnosis, of which PENNHIP method and OFA recommended description excel. However, classification divergences are observed between these methods. The aim of this study is to evaluate healthy and sick dogs' hip joints for hip dysplasia by PENNHIP method and OFA classification, comparing both methods' hip classifications. For this purpose, 40 dogs weighing more than 15 kg and minimum age of two years will be selected and submitted to radiographic evaluation by three examiners who will determine the distraction index (PENNHIP) and findings of degenerative joint disease by the pelvis ventrodistal projection (OFA). The results will be statistically analyzed to verify classification differences between the methods, as well as if the methods are sensitive for CCD diagnosis in adult dogs and if there is an agreement of inter-observer results.(AU)
