Study of the mechanical properties of nanoparticulate bovine hydroxyapatite reinforced with the composite ZrO2@SiO2

Abstract

This work aims to synthesize and evaluate the flexural strength of experimental dense polycrystalline ceramic composites of pure bovine hydroxyapatite (DPCBHA), Core-Shell ZrO2@SiO2 and DPCBHA reinforced with 15wt% of Core-Shell ZrO2@SiO2 particles. The hydroxyapatite will be extracted from bovine metatarsals and particulate until submicrometric particles powder is obtained. For core-shell synthesis, ZrO2 nanoparticles will be synthesized by the hydrothermal method and mixed with Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in basic medium by the Sol-Gel method. A proportion of 15wt% of the formed particles will be subjected to solid state mixture with hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in a ball mill, obtaining the group of DPCBHA15%ZrO2@SiO2. Ten specimens will be made in standardized dimensions of each group, following the standards of ISO 6872, 12 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm in height, considering the sintering volumetric shrinkage of approximately 21%. The materials will be submitted to biaxial flexural strength test and qualitative fractographic analysis. (AU)
