Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and measurement properties of the pediatric sleep questionnaire for children and adolescents with musculoskeletal pain into Brazilian-Portuguese

Abstract

Musculoskeletal pain is a common condition in children and adolescents. Musculoskeletal pain directly impacts the lives of children and adolescents. Sleep problems are commonly found in adolescents with musculoskeletal pain. The Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire has 22 items on the presence or absence of symptoms such as snoring, observed apnoea, difficulty breathing during sleep, daytime sleepiness and inattentive or hyperactive behavior. The original version of this questionnaire is in English. Aim: Translate, cross-culturally adapt and test the measurement properties of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire in a population of Brazilian children and adolescents with musculoskeletal pain. Methods: This study will be conducted in three steps: 1) Translation process, back-translation, and consensus on the final versions; 2) Pre-test in a sample of 30 parents and/or guardians of children and adolescents between 8 and 18 years of age with musculoskeletal pain; 3) Test the measurement properties in a sample of 100 parents and/or guardians of children and adolescents between 8 and 18 years of age with musculoskeletal pain. The cross-cultural adaptation and translation will be conducted following the five steps proposed by the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures and the measurement properties (reliability and ceiling and floor effects) will be tested following the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN). Descriptive sample data will be presented as mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile range for continuous data. Categorical data will be presented as absolute frequency and percentage. Reliability will be tested by the Cronbach's Alpha, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Minimal Detectable Change and Measurement Error. Ceiling and floor effects will be tested by percentage of individuals reported the higher and fewer score of questionnaire. Data normality will be evaluated through histograms. Expected results: It is expected a valid version of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire in Brazilian-Portuguese that considers the local culture and customs and keep the same meaning and objective of the original English version.
