Abstract

A detailed study of the greenhouse gases balance (carbon dioxide and methane) in Brazil is essential for the country to fulfill its commitments under the Paris Agreement. In particular, Brazil concentrates in the Amazon biome its main emissions associated with deforestation and forest degradation, and possible sinks through the natural forest, in addition to the commitments of the Paris Agreement for large-scale reforestation. Regarding the quantification of the terms that make up the greenhouse gas (GHG) balances in the intact forest, this project aims to compile long term data that has been collected in flux towers of the LBA and ATTO programs and combine with simulations using process-based models of vegetation dynamics to produce the best estimate of net carbon exchanges in intact forest areas (averages, interannual variability, recent and historical trends), and to study the factors that determine resilience or vulnerability of the ecosystem to possible future environmental changes (AU)
