Abstract

This project searches for a possible new facet of Hegelianism. More specifically, it aims to detail the place of Georg W. F. Hegel's philosophy in John McDowell's contemporary philosophical project. Therefore, as an introduction, we will firstly explain the approximation between analytic philosophy and Hegelianism, by presenting the Pittsburgh School and, consequently, John McDowell, which is one of the names of this school. Secondly, we will specify how, in McDowell, a fundamental problem that has not yet been resolved (the relationship between the mind and the world) is approached. Moreover, we will analyze how the treatment of this problem leads to a certain reading of some aspects of Kantian philosophy that makes way for Hegelian philosophy, given that the latter, for McDowell, is an overcoming of fundamental limitations of the former. Lastly, as the main part of the research, we will align the McDowellian conception of Hegelian absolute idealism with McDowell's own proposal of unboundedness of the concept presented in Mind and World (1994). On the basis of this investigation, we will also analyze the deepening of such alignment by highlighting the originality of McDowell's reading of Hegel after Mind and World, and the need to turn to a detailed analysis of the Hegelian text in the treatment of philosophical problems pointed out by contemporaneity.(AU)
