Abstract

Salivary glands Carcinomas are rare malignant tumors from major and minor salivary glands, corresponding to 0.28% of all globally estimated cancers in 2020. They are classified into 22 histologically different subtypes (WHO, 2017); this is due to salivary glands' complex histology, composed of diverse cell types. Among the most common subtypes are mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, adenocarcinoma NOS, acinic cell carcinoma, polymorphous adenocarcinoma, and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma. The risk factors of these carcinomas are not yet well established. Besides the rarity of these cancers, and also because of lacking epidemiological data on the different subtypes and their molecular patterns - especially in Brazil - the best multidisciplinary treatment strategy for the salivary glands carcinomas is still to be defined. Therefore, comprehending these tumors' biology and epidemiology is crucial for a better understanding of the prognosis of these diverse neoplasms, having this knowledge real impact on patients' care and treatment. This project aims the development of an epidemiological, histological, and molecular database about salivary glands carcinomas, and will be conducted at the Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo - ICESP, using its own clinical data. The clinical outcomes of the involved patients will also be evaluated; thus, we will be able to integrate epidemiological, histological, and molecular aspects into the clinical practice, focusing on a better comprehension and integration of the various aspects of salivary glands carcinomas.
