Adverse effects and factors related to dropout of the MBRP (Mindfulness-based Reactivity Prevention) protocol online version: a mixed-methods study with university students

Abstract

College students are susceptible to depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders. MBI (Mindfulness-Based Intervention) can contribute to improving students' mental health, but there is little knowledge about the existence of adverse effects related to practices and factors related to dropout. The purpose of this study is to explore the self-report of possible adverse effects and dropout predictors of the online MBRP protocol adapted for college students. The online MBRP protocol will be offered to approximately 200 participants, in 12 groups of up to 18 college students each, with weekly 90-minute meetings for 8 consecutive weeks. Participants will answer baseline questionnaires with sociodemographic data and mental health indicators. In all online MBRP sessions, field diaries will be registered. At the end, the volunteers will participate in a press conference and will answer an adverse effects questionnaire. Those who dropout of the intervention will be invited to answer the questionnaire and participate in an individual telephone interview. Qualitative data will be entered into the Nvivo software for coding, categorization and content analysis. For quantitative data, descriptive analysis of adverse effects and regression analyzes will be performed to study dropout predictors.
