Abstract

This is the "Experiments in artistic production with 3D printing" research work plan of the proposal that is being submitted to FAPESP by this researcher. It will be held at the University of Seville in 2022 and is linked to a general research project, already under development, supported by the CNPq Productivity and Research grant, whose title is "Printing 3D art with bioplastic". The overall project is centered on the theme of Art and Sustainability, focusing on applications of plastic in artistic works. In it are studied types of materials that can be used in the production of sculptures and interactive installations, among other types of poetic production, full or partially in 3D printing. It seeks to prove that there are ways to print in plastic with minimal environmental impact, while demonstrating that there are many difficulties for the artist, who works with the use of computer technologies, to move away, in the short term, from the use of products of industrial origin harmful to nature. At the current stage of this investigation, the printing is with thermoplastic PLA (Polylactic Acid), which is made from plants, is biodegradable, biocompatible and fully recyclable, being in the category of bioplastics. From September 2022, another phase will begin, including 3D printing with certain types of resin, known as less aggressive. This part will take place for six months at the University of Seville, where artistic experiments will be carried out in collaborative production with the host, Dr. Yolanda Spinola Elias. They will include wearable computing, a line of interest that she is developing and on which it applies artificial intelligence. At that moment, as stated in the general research project, other materials will be used that, despite being slow or complex for the degradation process in the environment, are already being produced with more sustainable industrialization, such as some types of silicone and acrylic. Although the long-term objective of the project is the development of the "Viridium" series, by the author of this project, which involves semi-autonomous interactive sculptures and installations, the instance referring to this research work plan is to experiment some materials, 3D printing processes and models of interaction with the perceiver/user of the works, not being restricted, therefore, to the creation of "Viridium". The basis of this part of the research involves Biomimicry, Natural Computing and Ecology. For technological development, free software and open or customizable technologies are applied. (AU)
