Abstract

Overhead sports require a complex motion of different body segments together and coordinated to generate energy transfer through the shoulder joint complex. Impairments in one or more kinetic chain segments reduce the effectiveness of energy transfer, which leads to greater susceptibility to injuries in the shoulder. Thus, the assessment and treatment of overhead athletes should not be limited to the shoulder joint but should extend to the entire kinetic chain. Therefore, physical performance tests (PPT's) should be used for a multi-joint evaluation, assessing the kinetic chain and testing the function of the athlete's upper extremity. The objective of the BEPE project is provided to the undergraduate student the opportunity to learn with one of the bests researchers in upper-extremity PPT's and to improve their knowledge regarding them and the prevention and rehabilitation of overhead athletes. The student will follow the data collection, processing, and interpretation of the project and of all other projects that will be developing at the same time. Simultaneously, the student will follow the Ph.D. Dorien Borms in their research projects. Finally, discuss the upper-extremity PPT's data of the Brazilian project. With the internship, it is expected that both, the student and the Brazilian group be able to improve their knowledge of PPT's to properly use them in further research and guarantee the best choice of physiotherapeutic treatment for patients.
