Abstract

One of the main objectives of breeders and researchers, in beef cattle, is to improve the growth and weight gain of the animals and to improve carcass characteristics and quality, with meat tenderness being one of the factors for consumer satisfaction. In the Brahman breed (Bos taurus indicus), the main genetic markers, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), that influence meat tenderness are those related to the genes calpastatin and calpain. This study aims to evaluate the frequency of the SNP associated with the CAPN1-4751gene in 70 Brahman animals, 35 embryo donors, and 35 breeders used in commercial reproduction programs in Brazil.(AU)
