Abstract

We propose an undergraduate research project whose goal is to determine the general characteristics of a hypothetical survey of galaxies, such that the correlation between the CMB temperature and the galaxy distribution in our universe is maximized. Such a correlation is induced by the so-called integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and is a direct consequence of the time variation of gravitational potentials induced during the transition from a non-relativistic matter-dominated universe to dark energy-dominated one, as indicated by measurements of luminosity distances and recession velocities of type IA supernovae. The student has to dominate the physics related to the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect through a study program focused on General Relativity and Cosmology, and at the end be capable of solving the optimization problem aforementioned.(AU)
