Abstract

Peri-implantitis is the main disease causing the loss of dental implants, with a prevalence of 56.6% in patients with at least one year after dental implant placement. Its occurrence is the result of biofilm formation on the implant surface, leading to inflammation of the peri-implant tissue and progressive loss of alveolar bone. Thus, the search for effective methods for preventing such disease has grown widely, given the importance of the topic in human health. Considering their biocompatibility and chemical stability, the coating of implant abutments with antimicrobial ceramic materials can contribute to the prevention of peri-implantitis. However, the current coating methods present limitations to the types of implants and, in some cases, delamination of the deposited layer, leading to implant loss. Thus, the development of antimicrobial materials and effective methodologies for implant coatings are relevant for scientific and technological development. In this context, this project has as main objectives the deposition of the ± phase of Ag2WO4 by Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) and irradiation by an electron beam system (Electron Beam Irradiation - EBI ) in titanium discs and abutments and to study, for the first time, the antimicrobial activity against the microorganisms Streptococcus sanguinis (IAL 1832), Actinomyces naeslundii (ATCC 51655), Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC 32277), Fusobacterium nucleatum (ATCC 25586), in single and dual-species biofilms associated with peri-implantitis, as well as studying the biocompatibility of these coatings. Thus, this project directly contributes to the scientific development on the investigation of the structure-property relationship of ±-Ag2WO4, as well as proposes the development of a new type of coating with application in the dental field.
