Abstract

The development of electronic devices from naturally derived materials is of enormous scientific interest. Melanin, a natural pigment composed of different structural subunits; may be particularly valuable due to their inherent biocompatibility and for being a hybrid conductor. However, the low conductivity of melanin limits the development of bioelectronic devices. In this project, electrochemical doping is proposed to increase the electronic and ionic conductivity of different synthetic melanin derivatives. Two strategies will be tested, the first involves the deposition of melanin by drop-casting on the working electrode for subsequent electrochemical doping and the second; doping will be carried out directly in the melanin solution by immersing the electrodes. The physics of these systems continues to attract a great deal of attention, as electrochemical doping is considered to be one of the main routes to improve the electronic properties of organic devices that operate in a liquid medium. Different electrochemical parameters will be tested to obtain and characterize melanins with different degrees of doping in its chemical structure. Finally, the doped melanin will be used as an electroactive component in Liquid-Gated Transistors (LGTs). We pretend to develop a device based on doped melanin and determine its electronic and ionic mobility, values that have not been reported so far in the literature. In this research different techniques of chemical, physical, morphological and electrical characterizations will be used. Our results will serve as a basis for the development of new bioelectronic devices based on doped melanin. Part of the proposed research will be carried out in partnership with National Nanotechnology Laboratory (LNNano, Campinas, São Paulo) and the scientific results will be published as joint articles in international high-level peer-reviewed journals, patents and will be presented at international conferences.
