Abstract

Studies on power relations within agrifood systems have gained momentum in recent years due to the increasing centrality of large transnational corporations in governance structures. Corporate concentration on food systems ends up inducing market structures in which large corporations manage to impose their interests at the expense of the interests of other social actors. On the other hand, pressures originating from organized civil society have increasingly influenced public managers to design and implement more complex agrifood policies that incorporate new agendas (e.g., environmental, family farming, territorial development, healthy eating, eradication of hunger), surpassing the traditional political economy approach. In this sense, research groups worldwide have been striving to establish new theoretical-analytical frameworks capable of analyzing power-related issues to explain the complexity of the processes of change in agrifood systems. Among these groups, researchers from the Università di Pisa stand out, considered an international reference in theoretical reflections and empirical analyses on processes of redefining power in agrifood systems and how changes in power dynamics can contribute to the transition towards more sustainable food systems. The proponent of this project hopes to carry out a five-month academic internship with the group of researchers that make up the Pisa Agricultural Economics Group (PAGE) at the Università di Pisa. During this period, the researcher intends to explore the theoretical-analytical framework on redefining power relations in food systems, aiming to use it to analyze and support the design and implementation of Brazilian agrifood policies. As a result, the proposing researcher hopes to appropriate the state of the art of theories, concepts, and analytical frameworks capable of analyzing processes of redefinition of power relations in food systems, qualifying him to identify the limits and potential of a national agenda enabled to promote more socio-environmentally sustainable agrifood systems based on more balanced power relations.
