Abstract

Given the theoretical and empirical pathways I have taken in my doctoral research so far, two important aspects have emerged and must be addressed and more deeply investigated, as they are at the center of this international research internship project: 1) a better understanding and characterization of the issue of state violence and the field of conflict as producers of spaces, markets, forms of living, and protection and advocacy networks; 2) the reflection upon the meanings, implications, and effects-methodological, epistemological, and political-of conducting research in a situated and located manner, as part of the networks that constitute themselves in and from the empirical field of research. Going on an exchange with Professor Ananya Roy at UCLA to undertake this project seems to be a special, fruitful, and enriching opportunity, as it will allow me to have contact with the research center she coordinates and the researchers who are part of it, as they focus on politics of dispossession and displacement (key topics to my doctoral project and research), as well as on the racial effects that these forms of violence produce. Moreover, Ananya Roy and the research center she coordinates provide reflections, accumulated knowledge, and experiences from research and investigation practices around methodologies that are committed to housing justice (which also provide an opportunity for reflection upon the meanings, conundrums, and consequences of conducting research this way). This opportunity of contact and exchange also means a possibility of meeting, expanding, and strengthening (on an international scale) networks of protection and resistance against evictions and dispossession processes that take place in big cities, both in the Global North and the Global South.
