Use of oxidative stress markers to evaluate bacterial cellulose membranes experimentally implanted in rat peritoneum.

Abstract

Bacterial Cellulose (BC) has been used for many applications in human medicine as a biotechnological alternative in tissue engineering, dental implants and, above all, to help in the wound's improvement in the form of medical devices such as dressing. In veterinary medicine, the use of BC is still quite incipient, especially in peritoneal implants. Furthermore, the implantation of any biomaterial is responsible for excessive generation of free radicals, and it can result in oxidative stress. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the systemic redox condition generated by the BC membrane implanted intraperitoneally in Wistar rats. For that, 50 rats, male or female, will receive surgically implantation of BC in the peritoneal cavity, with 25 animals receiving BC and 25 will be the sham group. After 60 days postoperatively, blood, liver and kidneys will be collected for oxidative stress tests. Analyzes of reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and lipoperoxidation will be performed. The results obtained will be spreadsheet and statistically analyzed to verify whether there is - or not - production of free radicals and consequent induction of oxidative stress in the implanted group.
