Abstract

Siluriformes represents on of the most diverse vertebrate groups on our planet, with 4019 valid species and 500 genera assigned to 39 families. They occupy a wide variety of freshwater ecosystems and are distributed all continents. Systematists recognize three major clades within Siluriformes, the neotropical Loricarioidei and Diplomistoidei and the globally distributed clade Siluroidei, a hyper-diverse group represented by 32 families. Recent molecular phylogenies support the monophyly of several family groups within Siluroidei, however many inter-and intrafamilial relationships remained poorly resolved and weakly supported. Herein, we propose the construction of new phylogeny using a phylogenomic approach of sequence capture of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) through next-generation sequencing. The present study will be fundamental for a better understanding of evolutionary relationships in the early branching of the Siluroidei, to test the hypotheses of interfamilial, intergeneric and interspecific relationships among groups, and to study the macroevolutionary processes shaping this large teleost lineage.
