Abstract

This research project aims to study six works by the Italian painter Antonio Ferrigno (1863-1940), currently preserved in the Museu Paulista at the University of São Paulo. A Florada, A Colheita, O Lavadouro, O Terreiro, O Beneficiamento and Café are dated from 1903, measuring 100x150cm and in oil on canvas. The theme of these landscapes refers to the coffee production cycle in São Paulo, more specifically, at Fazenda Santa Gertrudes, located in the interior of the state. The research proposes to study the works and analyze how the artist, during his stay in Brazil between 1893 and 1905, related to the theme addressed in these works - especially with regard to the committee - and with issues related to the importance of coffee in São Paulo. Through these works, we intend to analyze his role as an artist who diffused coffee production, to understand how his works were composed and how they function as an instrument of the value of coffee in the city of São Paulo, in addition to its economy of insertion in the São Paulo elite, which, in turn, operated as patron of the artistic productions of the period.
