Abstract

The unique properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) enable their use for instance in diagnostics and therapeutic applications.[1] The straightforward applicability of AuNPs in the medical field requires accordingly the development of facile synthesis approaches towards the manufacturing of ready-to-use materials. Additionally, the behavior of nano-sized gold colloids in contact with living systems needs further and deeper investigations. Particularly, the development of biomolecular coronas onto spherical surfaces and its biological consequences are still poorly understood. The formation of protein coronas is an important upstream process influencing different downstream biological events.[2] The protein corona indeed rewrites the original surface chemistry of gold sols thus providing a biological identity to the nanomaterial, and leading to different behaviors concerning cellular uptake, biodistribution, pharmacological and toxicological properties. The structure and the chemical nature of developed protein coronas are mainly dictated by the environment and by the structural attributes of the nanomaterial, which includes chiefly its surface chemistry. This proposal, fundamental in nature, are expected to lead to significant advances towards the application of AuNPs-based therapy, diagnostics and imaging.
