Abstract

Shrimps of the infraorder Caridea can be found in a wide range of aquatic environments, with some representatives showing economic importance on the international scene. In this group, it is possible to verify that the male reproductive system shows anatomical similarities between the representatives of the different families that composes this infraorder. However, we can observe a great specificity regarding the morphology and histochemistry of the spermatozoon and vas deferens (VD), structure of the sexual appendages, sexual systems and mating behavior and sperm transfer, among the different families of Caridea. Despite showing great complexity for the most varied sexual characters among these families, such characters were not investigated through the application of multiple approaches, considering the morphohistological aspects of the male reproductive system and/or the morphology and histochemistry of spermatozoa and VD integrated with molecular data. In this way, the aim of this project will be to understand the evolution of the male reproductive system in Caridea through the application of an integrative approach, verifying the morphoanatomy of the male reproductive system, as well as the histology and histochemistry of the VD, seminal fluid and spermotozoa, sexual system, mating behavior and copulation and sperm transfer, analysis of sexual appendages, and the correlation of these sexual characters to molecular data, which may clarify doubts related to the positions of different families within the infraorder Caridea. Thus, in this project it is expected to understand the evolution, fill gaps and carry out the reconstruction of ancestral character states for Caridea through a multidisciplinary approach.
