Abstract

Thermodynamic modeling is an important tool for investigating and quantifying the metamorphic processes that occurred during history of Earth. It is through it that thermobarometric results are obtained and mineral stability relationships are calculated (Lanari & Hermann, 2020). Due to the progress of technologies in the 21st century, a big advance occurred in the field of computational petrology and in the way that petrological knowledge is produced and transmitted. Thereby, new thermodynamic modeling techniques, with the use of iterative models integrated with quantitative compositional mapping were developed by Prof. Pierre Lanari and are improved until the present day by his group of computational petrology, at the University of Bern. The present project of research internship abroad intends to carry out the thermodynamic modeling of lithological types that occur in Liberdade Nappe, Andrelândia Terrain, South of Minas Gerais, using the recently developed techniques. The internship will take place at the University of Bern (Switzerland) and will be supervised by Prof. Pierre Lanari. The studied rocks are migmatites whose protoliths were wacke, pelite and amphibolite. It is intended to carry out thermodynamic modeling of at least two of these three lithotypes. The main programs that will be used for modeling are XMapTools and Theriak-Domino. Furthermore, if time allows, in garnet-bearing rocks an additional study of the distribution and size of garnet crystals will be carried out. Thus, the implementation of these techniques can be used to improve research at Liberdade Nappe and also in future research in the field of metamorphic petrology. (AU)
