Abstract

Unequal access to opportunities is a reality in Brazil. The concept of spatial equity contributes to understanding this question because, besides considering the spatial distribution of transportation, there are also assumptions of what would be a fair distribution, which depends on the school of thought on which it is based. The present project aims to analyze the spatial equity related to public transport and active transportation in access to education in different Brazilian cities and to make a comparison between them. In addition, we intend to observe how its Urban Mobility Plans deal with spatial equity (or inequity) of cities and school transportation. The project will use data on accessibility by public transport and active transportation to educational opportunities from the Projeto Acesso a Oportunidades, coordinated by the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (Ipea). In addition, it will use data available in open platforms of the city halls, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) and the Centro de Estudos da Metrópole (CEM) for the diagnosis, characterization, analysis and comparison of the cities.
