The popular in the downtown: the repercussions of new intervention projects in the downtown of Presidente Prudente/SP and São Carlos/SP from the 2010s

Abstract

The project proposed here intends to study the intervention projects launched for the consolidated downtowns of Presidente Prudente/SP and São Carlos/SP. More specifically, the projects launched for its downtowns since the 2010s. The choice of this theme is characterized as a continuation of the master's research developed on the downtown of Presidente Prudente, entitled "Public spaces and consumption: the impacts of economic logics under the production of urban space and its implications for the 'revitalization project' of the downtown area of Presidente Prudente/SP", but it is not restricted to the expansion of its questions. As a result of that research, it was observed a trend towards the consolidation of the Presidente Prudente downtown to the popular segments through new projects launched, specifically for: the Calçadão da Maffei; the 9th of July Square; the Flag Square; and the Camelodromo. Similar to the case of Presidente Prudente, projects were also launched for the downtown of São Carlos/SP: the new project for the General Osório Boardwalk, the Praça do Mercado, the Praça dos Voluntários and the city's Camelódromo. These projects are apparently aimed at the popular profile of its current customers. As a guiding question of the proposed research, observing the need for a survey of solid data that can validate it, it is presented as a hypothesis: to the course a process of consolidation of the popular character of the downtown of these cities through the projects launched for these centers to from the 2010s, to what extent corresponds a process of popularization, of socio-spatial segmentation of the downtown of the cities of Presidente Prudente and São Carlos.
