Abstract

Optical communications have successfully met the increasing demand for data transmission while reducing costs and energy consumption. However, current transmission technologies are rapidly approaching their fundamental information capacity, which could negatively impact economic and social progress. To address this issue and meet future demands while achieving cost and energy savings, spatial division multiplexing (SDM) has emerged as a promising solution. SDM allows for wider conduits of information by transporting multiple channels over a single fiber, using multimode and multicore fibers. However, implementing SDM technology faces challenges such as walk-off and mixture between spatial data tributaries, which limit scalability. This project aims to develop and characterize few-mode fibers and devices applied to SDM systems in this scenario. Specifically, it includes studies, simulations, and setups to investigate effects such as non-linearities, mode-dependent loss, mode delay in multimode fibers, and laser phase noise, with the ultimate goal of advancing the understanding of non-linearities in SDM technology.
