Abstract The growing increase in world demand for energy, the consequent exploitation of non-renewable sources for fossil fuel production accompanied by climate change attributed to the increase in the concentration of CO2 and other greenhouse gases sparked interest in the generation and use of renewable energy and sustainable. Bioethanol presents itself as a potential alternative to replace gasoline, given the high demand for fuels directed to the transportation sector. This biofuel is obtained from the fermentation of biomass from different raw materials, such as sugar cane, agricultural forest residue and algae. Bioethanol obtained from microalgae biomass has aroused interest due to its easy cultivation, high accumulation of carbohydrates in its cells and, mainly, its high photosynthetic efficiency, contributing to CO2 mitigation. However, it is necessary to identify strains capable of increasing the accumulation of carbohydrates associated with high biomass productivity under certain cultivation conditions for its effective production. In addition, the carbohydrates accumulated by the microalgae need to be hydrolyzed so that fermenting microorganisms can transform them into ethanol. Thus, this project aims to screen and select microalgae previously isolated from impacted sites, with recognized potential for the production of bioproducts of biotechnological interest, in order to promote high production of biomass with the maximum accumulation of carbohydrates, in addition to determining the better hydrolysis conditions to enable, then, maximum conversion rate to bioethanol.
