Abstract

The present research project aims to reflect on food insecurity in households headed by single mothers, through a Marxist approach bibliographical and documentary research. We will discuss the history of the struggle for land in Brazil and how it relates to current hunger data in the country, as well as addressing the sexist framework that affects single mothers, promoting greater incidence of food and nutritional insecurity.Food insecurity is an extremely current and necessary issue, which is directly linked to the concentration of land ownership in Brazil. The lack of a popular agrarian reform and the social and political difficulties faced by the Food and Nutritional Security Policy of Brazil and Franca/SP hinder the fight against hunger and malnutrition. Today, according to the data from the Penssan Network (2022), 33 million people are experiencing hunger in Brazil, a figure that more deeply affects single mothers.Due to the sexist structure existing in the country, single mother women are more likely to experience economic and social vulnerability and food insecurity. For Black women, the challenges are even deeper: facing both misogyny and racism simultaneously brings greater challenges to survive, care for, and feed children and adolescents. The book "Child of the Dark", by Carolina Maria de Jesus, as a Black woman, slum dweller, and single mother of three children, will be able to show us the characteristics of hunger, its color, race, social class, and gender.
