Abstract

This project aims to interpret the ways in which two types of carnival associations in São Paulo (Afoxé and Bloco Afro) dialogue with the worldview of Afro-Brazilian religions, expressing their values outside the scope of the terreiros, making them known and shared by a wider audience. The terms present in these dialogues, such as the exaltation of the characteristics of Afro-Brazilian deities (orixás, voduns, etc.), the use of ritual aesthetics, the appreciation of music and dance coming from the terreiro, expressions of African origin, among other aspects, are the objects of this study. The associations chosen are Afoxé Omo Dada (Sons of the Crown of Dada), originated from the terreiro Ilê Iya Mi Oxum Muiya, founded in 1980, being the oldest in activity in the capital of São Paulo and which opens the parade of samba schools in the sambódromo in Saturday of carnival, and the Afro block Ilu Obá De Min, created in 2004 by a group of black women percussionists and people who go to terreiros and who usually perform in the streets of the center of the capital in traditional places related to the origin of the black carnival in São Paulo.
