Abstract

As climate impacts escalate worldwide, adaptation actions to address the consequences of climate change in urban areas are imperative due to adverse impacts on human health, livelihoods, and infrastructure. Incorporating nature-based solutions (NBS) and enhancing communication between climate knowledge and urban planning are crucial for effective and sustainable adaptation strategies, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions like Brazil. This proposal aims to contribute to the lack of studies in tropical and subtropical regions by reviewing existing climate data, generating climate information, and providing recommendations for urban planning with a focus on nature-based solutions. The specific objectives include producing Local Climate Zone (LCZ) maps, applying Geoclimate and TempMap methods for São Paulo, and exploring effective data mapping methods for operational planning purposes. The study also involves discussing the effects of NBS, interacting with ongoing projects at the host institution, and learning from the data generation process and interactions between academia and local government. The internship will contribute to climate-sensitive urban planning and adaptation actions in São Paulo by advancing climate information generation, data visualization for decision-making, and fostering collaboration between academia and the public sector. The knowledge gained will be shared with the Biota Synthesis team, São Paulo State Government, and local government partners through dedicated meetings, technical reports, and scientific publications.
