Abstract

In the production of glass ceramics, whose applications range from domestic to high technology, the control of the nucleation-growth process is essential to determine the final physical properties of the precipitated crystalline phases. In addition to being an excellent material for applications such as radiation shielding, lead metasilicate PbSiO3 (PS) stands out from the scientific point of view for being a model system to study the multistage crystallization mechanism that generates glass-ceramic silicates presenting heterogeneous nucleation, mainly due it its specific Raman signatures and well-defined XRD peaks facilitate the monitoring of physical and chemical changes induced by varying thermodynamic quantities. Employing in situ analyses at high pressures and high temperatures we will study the thermodynamic properties of each of the stable or metastable phases of PS. In addition to elucidating scientific issues essential for understanding the crystallization process in these systems, the search for external conditions - such as the application of high pressures and high temperature - capable of inducing changes in the energy of each intermediate phase of the nucleation-growth-crystallization process, opens the possibility of modifying the properties of the clusters and establishing new crystallization pathways. This scientific initiation project is included in the scope of activities of the current Regular Research Grant 2021/13974-0.
