Abstract

This research intends to study a specific group of funerary, ekphrastic and epidictic epigrams written during the Hellenistic period and centred on poets of the past as well as some contemporary authors. The corpus to be analysed has 72 epigrams written between the beginning of Hellenistic period (323 BC) and the elaboration of Meleager's Garland (I BC), preferably discussing poets judged canonical and models of imitation according to the grammarians of that time. Therefore, the study of the corpus provides a clearer perception of the reception of previous Greek poetry, since these epigrams reflect a critic judgement of past literature and, at the same time, create the idea of continuity of poetic tradition. By dividing the research in four sections based on the genre criterion - configuring four articles -, it will be possible to understand better how the epigrammatists explore the idea of epic, tragedy, lyric and jambos and the way in which this literary heritage was received, evaluated, and integrated into the poetic practice of the Hellenistic period.
