Digital and 3D printed models: influence of dental positioning and professional experience on trueness

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate, considering a gold standard plaster model, the trueness of digital and printed models of patients with variations in dental positioning through linear measurements made by professionals with different levels of experience. Plaster models of 3 patient profiles will be obtained: 01 with crowding, 01 with diastema and 01 with tilted molar adjacent to an anodontic area. Intraoral scanning will be performed 5 times on each patient, generating a total of 15 digital model files, which will be 3D printed by FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and DLP (Digital Light Processing) technologies, generating 30 solid models. Twenty professionals (10 juniors and 10 seniors) will be selected to perform the measurements on the digital and printed models and the trueness will be evaluated considering the measurements on the plaster model (reference model). The discrepancy between the measurements of the digital and printed models and the measurements of the reference models will be calculated. Next, the mean errors in each measured region will be compared using Analysis of Variance (Two-way) and Bonferroni Test with 95% reliability. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of FORP-USP (CAAE: 59831622.2.0000.5419) and all participants gave their free and informed consent to participate in the research.
