Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, by itself, presents significant impairment in sleep quality and functional capacity. In addition, depending on the progression and severity of the disease, many patients may have overlapping obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). However, little is known whether the overlapping of these diseases causes additional damage to sleep quality, as well as greater functional impairment. Objectives: To assess and determine the impact of OSAS overlapping risk on different COPD severities, sleep quality and functional capacity measured by the six-minute walk test (6MWT).Methods: In the first stage, 80 volunteers over 50 years of age will undergo a clinical evaluation, pulmonary function tests and home sleep tests for diagnostic confirmation and disease staging. In the second stage, they will respond to the sleep quality assessment questionnaire and then will be submitted to the functional capacity assessment by the 6MWT.Expected results: It is expected that individuals with a higher risk of overlapping OSAS with COPD have impaired sleep quality, as well as greater functional decline, depending on the progression and severity of the diseases.
