Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic syndrome of multiple origin characterized by persistent hyperglycemia or insulin resistance and resulting from lack of insulin and/or the inability of insulin to adequately exert its effects. If uncontrolled, DM can cause functional changes in different organs and systems, with emphasis on diabetic nephropathy, coronary disease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral arterial disease. In addition to these changes, there is the presence of inflammation and increased oxidative stress, which potentiates the complications of the disease and reduces the life expectancy of diabetics. D-limonene, a monoterpene found naturally in citrus fruit peel, has demonstrated important pharmacological properties in several studies, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic effects. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the antidiabetic effects of D-limonene in Wistar rats induced to Diabetes Mellitus by the drug alloxan and also to investigate the possible repercussions of this treatment on the gene expression of renal (klotho, Kim-1), cardiac biomarkers (BNP) and inflammatory (IL-6).
