Abstract

This project aims to deepen the doctoral research developed at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of São Paulo through a research internship at the Frankfurt Memory Studies Platform (FMSP) located at the Goethe Universität Frankfurt Am Main for six months, under the supervision of Prof. Astrid Erll, founder and director of FMSP. The research in Brazil examines how memories of political violence are represented in the urban space by examining the circulation of ideas, experiences, and practices between South American sites of memory and conscience. On the one hand, it analyzes the history and actuation of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. On the other hand, it examines the construction of five sites of conscience related to the dictatorship in Latin America (Memorial da Resistência, Memoria Abierta, Villa Grimaldi, Núcleo Memória, and Memoria Abierta), investigating the role of ICSC in each one and vice-versa. To explore these questions, the research internship at the Frankfurt Memory Studies Platform (FMSP) based at the University of Goethe aims to strengthen the research's theoretical and methodological approach, diversify sources, deepen pre-established co-working partnerships, and establish new dialogues and partnerships with foreign scholars. We aim to achieve these goals by attending the biweekly meetings of the Study Group "Interdisciplinary Memory Studies," hosted at the Frankfurt Humanities Research Centre (FZHG); the workshops and lectures offered by the FMSP and partner groups; the research at Goethe University's library; by attending and presenting papers in specialized conferences; by the development of papers in co-working with FMSP's researchers; and by the development of fieldworks in Frankfurt and Berlin.
